Waving the four species.
The Ohr Hachaim, in his מאור החיים, explains the deeper meaning of the waving of the four species on Sukkos.
He writes that a person who shakes his lulav forward is like the person who stretches out his hand to accept a gift from another. He then returns his hand to his body when he receives the gift. We are standing in front of Hashem and asking Him for a boon, whereafter we return to our place in gratitude. (The Halacha considers the returning of the lulav to a person as part of the mitzvah of waving the four species.)
The lulav hints to the seven tzadikim, in whose merit we beg Hashem to grant us good fortune for the new year. We stretch out our hand, begging Hashem for this gift, and we return the hands to ourselves in the hopes that we have received it already.
