Do you know why I like the Mussarniks? Because they live with Emes and not fancy Chitzoniyus, albeit even in Ruchaniyus! You should see the Hakdama of Sefer Chovos Halvavos, how he keeps stressing that: רַחְמָנָא לִיבָא בָעֵי by Hashem the main thing is what’s in your heart! Your Ratzon! Your striving! etc. There is a world-famous Koach in Klal Yisroel whom many people love and admire, since he has accomplished worlds.
חובות הלבבות (הקדמה) וכאשר התברר לי חיוב מצוות הלבבות מן התורה, כאשר התברר מן השכל, חפשתי עליו בדברי רבותינו, זכרונם לברכה, ומצאתיו יותר מפורש בדבריהם ממה שהוא מפורש בספרים ומן השכל. קצתו בכלל, כמו שאמרו (סנהדרין קו ב) רחמנא לבא בעי, ואמרו (ירושלמי ברכות פ"א ה"ח) לבא ועינא תרי סרסורי דחטאה נינהו . וקצתו בפרט, במסכת אבות, שאין צריך להאריך בזכרו. ומצאתי הרבה ממנו במידותיהם ובמנהגיהם המקובלים מהם, כשהיו נשאלים על עניניהם, כמו שאמרו רבותינו, זכרונם לברכה (מגילה כז ב) במה הארכת ימים. וראיתי מצד הכתוב עוד במכה נפש בשגגה (במדבר לה יא) שאינו חייב מיתה ,ומי שהוא שוגג במצוות אשר לא תעשינה, שחייבים עליהן במזיד אחת מארבע מיתות בית דין או כרת, שאינו חייב עליהן אלא חטאת או אשם. וכל זה ראיה, כי העיקר בחיוב העונש אינו אלא עד שיהיו הלב והגוף משתתפים במעשה ,הלב בכוונתו והגוף בתנועתו. וכן אמרו במי שעשה מצוה ולא נתכוין לעשותה לשם שמים, שאינו מקבל עליה שכר.
When I talk about him, all I say is: “He deserves credit, since he tries so hard”. People look at me funny. They say that I sound like I’m talking about a nebach. But they aren’t viewing this person with Torah eyeglasses, even if they learn day and night. They need a true Toras Mussar view, and live with the truth. All his accomplishments are a gift from Shamayim, which he rightfully earned.
However, Olam HaZeh is an Olam HaSheker steeped in Chitzoniyus, and the burning issue is: מַה יֹאמְרוּ הַבְרִּ יוֹת What will people say?? All you care about is what is Chashuv in the eyes of a Basar V'dam (flesh and blood human). By Hashem, it’s all the Lev! Believe it or not, trying and desiring is Mamash everything! Do you know what happens to this great personality, if and when he suddenly isn’t performing? Or if someone else outdoes him, or he gets old and incapable? You throw him straight into the garbage! But I would only love him and respect him more and more.
The Yesod of a true Oved Hashem (especially in Novardok) is when a person gets excited only by Hashem, which includes the incredible greatness of His spectacularly beautiful world, and His amazing Hashgacha Pratis
That’s what we call Olam HaSheker; and we do this to ourselves as well. When you fall short, and miss davening and/or learning, or you can’t do the Chesed you wanted to do, you put yourself straight into the trash can, and you look down at a “failure”. That’s what happens when you live with Chitzoniyus.
You don’t respect all those unsung heroes who try so hard and can’t! You need plenty of Mussar to get you into an Olam HaPenimi.
