Although today we don't have a Mishkan (or a Beit HaMikdash), we do have a "miniature Beit HaMikdash". In fact, we have many of them. Every synagogue is a mini-Holy Temple and should be treated with the same respect as the Jews had for the portable Mishkan in the desert and the Beit HaMikdash in Jerusalem.
If you ever have the chance to go to the Kotel HaMaaravi, the Western Wall in Jerusalem, you can get a taste of that sense of awe and respect felt by the Jews in the days of the Mishkan and the Beit HaMikdash.
