The Lechem Hapanim and the Heart in Torah Study

Gan Hatorah | December 10, 2025

עוד יוסף חי – 25:30

“ונתת על השלחן לחם פנים לפני תמיד” – “On the Shulchan you shall place the Lechem Hapanim before Me, always.” When the Posuk says, “לחם” it alludes to the Torah Hakdosha, as the Torah is called, “לחם” – Mishlei 9:5 “לכו לחמו בלחמי”. The complete Limud HaTorah is when it comes from the לב, from the heart, and not that it should just be coming from the mouth. Koheles 1:16 “ולבי ראה הרבה חכמה ודעת” – “And my heart has seen much wisdom and learning.” The Torah begins with the letter ב' and ends with the letter ל', which spells לב, for one needs to put his heart into the Torah. The Milui of the letters of “לב” (Milui is the full spelling of the letters, “למ"ד, בי"ת”) spells “תמיד”. This is what the Posuk is saying here, “ונתת על השלחן לחם פנים” – referring to the Torah Hakdosha, that it should be “תמיד” that one should look into the “לב” and one will see that the Torah must be “תמיד” always with him. לימוד התורה, learning the Torah Hakdosha is represented by the letter ל'. If one Chas V’sholom does not have Torah at his שלחן, at his table, then the ל' is removed from the שלחן, and the letters נחש remain, meaning that the wicked Nachash will have power over them. By one adding to Torah to his table, the ל' is added, and then it becomes a proper שלחן.
