In the days of the Beis Hamikdash, a korban todah was brought by one who survived a difficult experience, such as illness, overseas travel, or imprisonment. Although we can never repay Hashem for all His kindness, the least we can do is express our gratitude. The truth is that we experience miracles daily, though we may not even be aware of them. Perhaps a car headed toward us stopped just in time. Perhaps there was something slippery on the ground and we stepped over it. Hashem takes care of us constantly, even when we are unaware. So we say mizmor l’sodah every day, thanking Him for His constant supervision.
