Those Who Do Not Have the Custom

למודי משה | February 28, 2026

There are communities that do not have the custom to bang at all when the name of Haman is recited in the Megillah. There are a number of reasons for this:

  1. It is not honorable for a shul to have all that noise.
  2. It is very common for the reader to continue before the noise concludes, and some people are not yotzei.
  3. All the noise at the recital of Haman is considered by many as too much of a hefsek during the Megillah, since according to some opinions one should not be mafsik more than the time it takes to take one breath.
  4. Banging on the floors and walls of the beis hakenesses can cause things to break and one will be in violation of לא תעשון כן לה' אלקיכם (Devorim 12:4).
  5. It can be dangerous, as pieces of wood and metal may end up flying through the air, and can potentially cause damage.
  6. Fear of our enemies who may hear all the noise and become annoyed and start fighting with us.

The opinion and custom of Harav Shlomah Zalman Auerbach zt”l was not to bang at all.
