Chesed and the Merit of Helping Others

Torah Wellsprings | December 07, 2025

When Rav Shach was old, his wife was ill and bed-bound. She couldn't take care of the house anymore; therefore, every day, Rav Shach would go to the yeshiva's dining room, take a portion of food for his wife, and carry the dish for his rebbetzin.

His talmidim thought it was disrespectful for their esteemed rosh yeshiva to be seen carrying a dish of food through the streets of Bnei Brak, so they offered to carry it for him. That way, the rosh yeshiva won't have to disgrace the honor of his Torah...

The rosh yeshiva looked at them with wide eyes, shocked, and told them, "If you would see me carrying the four minim on Succos through the streets, would you also think it was disrespectful? Of course not! Because you know that it is a mitzvah, and a great zechus to carry the four minim. This is also a great merit for me. I am taking care of the rebbetzin. This is a zechus, and it is neither a tirchah nor a disgrace. It is a zechus to do chesed."
