Sefer Otzar Yisroel further relates that when Rav Hirsh of Rimanov was nifter, Rav Eliezer of Dzikov zy”a cried a lot and could not be consoled. His son asked him, “Why are you making such a fuss and crying so much?”
The Rebbe of Dzikov said to him, “If you knew who Rav Hirsch was like I do, you would not ask this question. You know that if I’m told a Medrash for a few minutes during shalosh seudos, I can recite Torah about it for half an hour, and if I’m told a slightly longer Medrash, I can recite Torah for an hour. You know that I know how to say Torah. But I once saw how Rav Hirsch made a gesture with his nose in the middle of singing. After davening, I told Rav Hirsch that I could tell that when he made that gesture, he had in mind such-and-such kavanos.
He told me, ‘I had that in mind, as well as other kavanos...
“I thought for a minute and said, ‘The other kavanah was such-and-such...’ He confirmed that he had that kavanah in mind, and added that he also had other kavanos.
“I think you can understand how much a tzadik like him can have in mind to accomplish with one motion of the nose. He had such a holy mind! Therefore, it shouldn’t be hard for you to understand why I am crying so much.”
