The Middah of Calmness

The Way of Emunah | December 07, 2025

Rav Itzikel of Pshevorsk zy”a related that every year for the Shabbos of Parshas Parah, the Sanzer Rov zy”a would travel to bask in the presence of Rav Osher of Ropshitz zy”a. After Rav Osher’s petirah, he would travel to spend this Shabbos with the Aryeh D’Bei Ilai. After the Aryeh D’Bei Ilai’s passing, he would go to Rav Tzvi Hirsch of Rimanov zy”a.

The first time he came, he arrived on Wednesday or Thursday and Rav Hirsch said to him, “Sanzer Rov, what are you doing here? Have you come for a din Torah?”

The Sanzer Rov answered, “I came for Shabbos. I have a tradition that one must travel to a Tzadik Hador for Shabbos of Parshas Parah.”

Afterwards, the Sanzer Rov praised the Rimanover’s middah of “hishtavos” (calmness, i.e., treating each situation with an equal reaction), saying that he never saw such calmness anywhere else. It made no difference to him if the Sanzer Rov was merely passing through Rimanov for a din Torah or if he came specially to see him because he considered him the Gadol Hador.
