Ramban and Rashbam say that the name of Eisav is a Bizayon, since it shows that he gave away such a Chashuva Bechora for some red food since he couldn’t control his Ta'ava. Chazal bring the Passuk: אִּם יִּהְיוּ חֲטָאֵיכֶם כַשָנִּים כַשֶלֶג יַלְבִּינוּ ישעיה א יח Even if your sins are (red) like “Shani”, they will turn white as snow! We see that a: חֵטְא sin is called red (שָנִּי) and becoming pure is called Lavan (white). It is interesting that Yaakov had two main adversities in his life; Eisav and Lavan, who both hated him and tried to kill him. We can suggest that they were also both symbols of different types of Yetzer Hara’s.
It is known that Lavan was a tricky person, and he acted “white” like a Tzaddik. Lavan HaArami means Lavan the Ramai, i.e., the tricky Ganav. He was a first-class liar and thief. R' Nosson Wachtfogel Zatzal said that not only did he fool others; he fooled himself also. He spoke about his daughters as if he loved them, when in truth they felt like: נָכְרִּיוֹת לא טו strangers. About him, Yaakov said: עִּם לָבָן גַרְתִּי וְתַרְיַ"ג מִצְוֹת שָמַרְתִּי I kept all 613 Mitzvos even despite living with Lavan. To live with an Eisav who was an obvious Rasha (red) isn’t as difficult as with a Lavan.
Of course, Eisav was plenty tricky, and he tried to fool his father into thinking he was a Tzaddik. (Rashi). He was also compared to a pig who shows off his split hooves, i.e. “I’m Kosher”; but you don’t realize that he doesn’t chew his cud and is therefore Treife. (Rashi). But with a name “Lavan” (white) הָרַמַאי “the tricker”, his very essence was “Mr. Tricky”. Just as the: נָחָש הַקַדְמוֹנִּי first snake was: עָרוּם מִכֹל חַיַת הַשָדֶה more “cunning” than all the other Cha’yos (animals), so must a person be: עָרוּם בְיִרְאָה ברכות יז א shrewd and cunning in Yiras Shamayim to counteract the Yetzer Hara. The worst gangsters and: רוֹצְחִּים murderers thought they were Tzaddikim (like Al Capone and Dillinger, the famous cop killer, considered themselves the nicest people).
Hamas for sure thinks they are Tzaddikim, just like the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition and all the “Holy wars”. L'havdil, Sin’as Chinam is often disguised in being against certain Shitos in Klal Yisroel with so many proofs against them. And it’s all the Fruma Yetzer Hara in disguise.
