Fear of Witchcraft

Greeting and Blessing:

Your letter reached me with considerable delay. In it you write about your brother who lives overseas, who asked you to convey to me his apprehension of some witchcraft practices, etc. that may be directed against him.

Since your brother is, as you write, an observant Jew who is also involved in Jewish studies, including the Tanya, etc., it is rather surprising that he should have such an apprehension, in view of the clear teachings of our Torah, Toras Chaim to the effect that G-d's benevolent Providence extends to each and everyone individually, and that “Hashem is your Guardian, your Protective Shade at your right hand,” and much more in this vein.

Please convey the above to your brother, as well as the assurance of Torah that all he has to do is to keep wide open the channels and vessels to receive G-d’s blessings in all needs through the everyday life and conduct in accordance with His Will, namely in accordance with the Torah and mitzvot.

Since he felt impelled to communicate his feelings to me, this may be an indication that I should remind him to have the mezuzot of his home, as well as his tefillin, checked to make sure they are kosher.

I further see an opportunity to convey to him through you, either in your own name, or in my name if you wish, that since by Divine Providence he lives in a city and community where the learning of Tanya has only started recently, that it probably is one of his essential purposes of living there to be instrumental in spreading the learning and teachings of the Tanya and chasidut, and generally promote Torah-true Yiddishkeit to the fullest extent of his influence. For, although very often a human being may think that the reason for being in a certain place at a certain time is something that is evident to the physical eye, there is a possibility that there is a deeper and more essential purpose which is far more important than meets the eye at first glance. There is also no need to emphasize that whatever one’s parnosso is, it has to be in compliance with Shabbos and Yom Tov observance, observing Kashrus of foods and beverages, and other essential aspects.

If you let me know your brother’s full Jewish name, together with the mother’s Jewish name, as is customary, I will remember him in prayer for the fulfillment of your heart’s desires for good.

With blessing,
