How to Attain Excitement from Holiness

Excitement Comes from Novelty

The way excitement works is that a person experiences a new idea or experience—something he’s not accustomed to. When a person is in the dark and a bright light goes on, this causes excitement.

The Ribbono shel Olam has placed us into a world of darkness—dark in many ways. It’s dark, and the light is concealed. We must seek out the Ribbono shel Olam with emunah... not an easy task. Darkness means that we experience problems and dilemmas during our lives. Darkness means that we endure fierce and intense battles with the yetzer hara. Darkness means all kinds of concealment that we live with—concealment that hides the Presence of the Ribbono shel Olam in This World. And when a Yid illuminates this darkness—through emunah, through overcoming his challenges, and so forth—this evokes great excitement within him.

Excitement Following Davening

A Yid gets up to daven, and he finds it difficult to concentrate. He wants to meditate on the הבורא גדלות and on his own lowliness. He makes the effort... he recites Tehillim before davening, and he learns Torah to warm his soul and place himself in the proper mindset. As he davens, he toils mightily to remain present and concentrated. The first two days, he isn’t very successful, but on the third day, the Ribbono shel Olam opens his heart—and the excitement is incredible, precisely because of the difficult road to getting there.
