The neviim taught that when we cannot bring korbanos, davening serves as a replacement. Each of our three tefillos corresponds to a korban. Each morning and afternoon was a korban tamid, for which Shacharis and Mincha serve as something of a replacement. Although no korbanos were brought at night, the kohanim would burn leftover parts of that day’s offerings—this corresponds to Maariv. Reading the parshios of korbanos and studying their laws is also considered equivalent to bringing them. Therefore, in many shuls, sections from the Torah about korbanos are recited before Pesukei Dezimra.
