Thoughts of Sorcery

Rebbe Responsa | June 27, 2025

Dismiss thoughts of sorcery; strengthen Jewish observance, speak to doctor; Effect of family on each other

By the Grace of G-d
In the days of Sefira, 5740
Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mr. . . .
New York, N. Y. 10036
Greeting and Blessing:

This is to acknowledge receipt of your letter in which you write about your daughter.

You ought to completely dismiss from your mind any thought of sorcery and the like. But you ought to encourage her to strengthen her adherence to the Jewish way in the everyday life and conduct, since in addition to this being a must for its own sake, this is also the channel to receive G-d's blessings in all needs.

It would also be advisable to speak to a doctor-friend about the possibility of her seeing a doctor to have an opportunity to unburden herself emotionally.

Inasmuch as a Jewish family constitutes one entity, one body, where a benefit to any part of it is a benefit to all its parts, every additional effort in matters of Torah and mitzvos on the part of members of the family, particularly the parents, directly and indirectly will benefit all the members of your family, including, especially, your daughter. And of course, there is always room for advancement in all matters of goodness and holiness, Torah and mitzvos, which are infinite, being connected with the Infinite.

The present days of Sefira are particularly suitable for the above, inasmuch as this is a period of preparation for the Festival of Mattan Torah (Shovuos), when all Jews reaffirm their commitment to the Torah and mitzvos and receive the Torah anew with joy and inwardness.

With blessing,

P. S. Our office has no facilities for writing in French, but you can continue to write to me in this language, which I understand. However, let us know in what language you would prefer to receive the reply, in Hebrew, Yiddish or English.
