Understanding Hashem's Mercy in Judgment

Inspired by a Story | January 20, 2026

This first Passuk of this week’s Parsha, ‘Vayedaber Elokim el Moshe – and Hashem spoke to Moshe. Vayomer Ani Hashem – and He said I am Hashem.’

Elokim is name of Hashem that represents His judgment. Hashem is the name of Hashem that represents His mercy.

Hashem said to Moshe even when I speak to you with Midas Hadin – judgment, you should know that I am still then Hashem of mercy, because the judgment is also mercy as it is for my benefit.

The Tiferes Shlomo adds another important message.

We all have a dream picture of how we would like our lives to be. The perfect house, wealth, health, perfect spouse and kids, and much more. We are sure that if we had it all we would be able to serve Hashem so much better.

But, sometimes or maybe most times our lives aren’t perfect. Nu, maybe we would be able to survive our challenge. But then we look at our neighbors next door or across the street and they have it so much better. We are so sure that if our lives were like theirs we wouldn’t be wasting it like them, we would be able to spend our time davening better, learning more and giving so much more Tzeddaka.

But for some unknown reason beyond our understanding Hashem decided differently. Hashem doesn’t need our perfection in Avodas Hashem having everything we wanted. No, Hashem wants us to make the best of the situation we’re in and have real Emunah that Hashem put us in this situation because this is the best possible way that our Neshamos will reach perfection.

When Hashem sent Moshe to Mitzrayim, Moshe asked Hashem, the Yidden will ask him what is His name, what should he tell them.

Hashem replied, “E’heye asher E’heye’. E’heye is a name of Hashem, but it’s literal translation is ‘I will be.’ Rashi explains that Hashem told Moshe I will be with Klal Yisrael in this exile and I will be with them in the future exiles.

The Shach asks that Rashi should have written, I will be with them in this exile and I will be with their children in the future exiles.

The Shach answers based on the Ari Hakadosh that all the Neshamos of Klal Yisrael of all the generations were in Mitzrayim and went through terrible suffering. Hashem told Moshe that in the same way Hashem was there in Mitzrayim, He will be there in all future exiles with them.

Rashi continues that Moshe said to Hashem that they are still in exile and Hashem is already informing them of future exiles? Hashem agreed and that is the continuation of the Passuk, “E’heye shelachani aleichem’ Hashem sent me, but this time it only says E’heye once for this exile.

The Tiferes Shlomo adds that there were Neshamos in Mitzrayim that knew that in the future they will come in to this world and be big Tzaddikim, but even so they never complained about the terrible suffering because they were so clear in their Emunah that it was for their benefit.

May Hashem help all of us that we merit to reach this level and understand that in whatever situation we are in, even when it seems that Hashem is afflicting us, that we can thank Him because we have steadfast faith that it is for our salvation.

And if we are able to reach this understanding, we can sing the Passuk, ‘Ze hayom assa Hashem – this day Hashem made, Nagila venismecha bo – let us rejoice and be happy with it.’

Which day is the Passuk referring to that we should rejoice and be happy?

The answer is: Every day!

How?

Because we have Emunah that ‘Assa Hashem’ – Hashem did it and put us in this position. So if Hashem did it, He sure has in mind for our good, so we are capable to rejoice every day!
