Doctor Goldberg prescribed to Bracha a certain medicine that needed to be taken even on Shabbos.
“Ok, it’s time to take your medicine, Bracha,” said Imma.
“But I need to take exactly 0.5 ml of the medicine,” said Bracha, “And we use a measuring syringe to get that amount. How can we measure on Shabbos?!”
Her brother Chaim overheard the conversation and said, “Hmm...good point. It is not permitted to measure on Shabbos.”
“Maybe we can just measure approximately?” asked Bracha.
Question: Can the syringe be used in this situation to measure exactly, to measure approximately, or not at all?
Hints & Answers
HALACHA CHALLENGE: Although measuring on Shabbos is not permitted, this prohibition does not apply when measuring is needed for a mitzva (O.C. 306:7). And the Mishna Berura (306:36) teaches that a procedure that facilitates healing is a mitzva.
RHYME: “nicely”.
Parsha Riddle
- וְזֹאת הַתּוֹרָה אֲשֶׁר־שָם משֶׁה לִפְנֵי בְנֵי יִשְרָאֵל (Devorim 4:44). During Hagbah, we recite this pasuk as we look at the writing in the Sefer Torah and bow (O.C. 134:2, M.B. 134:11). At that moment, if one internalizes the words that he is saying as he is looking at the writing in the Sefer Torah, he strengthens his emunah in the truth of the Torah. It’s a special, unique opportunity that should not be missed out on.
- They are soldiers of a Jewish army that captured a city. If they are merely hungry, they can eat non-kosher food which they find in the houses (if no other food is available). [See Rambam, Melachim 8:1. This halacha is based on the verse (Devorim 6:11), “And houses full of all good...”]
