This week’s Torah portion, Vayakhel, is combined with the next one, Pekudei, in several years. In other years, however, including this year, they are read on separate weeks. Vayakhel means “and he gathered”, representing unity – revealing the unity of everything in the world, for everything was created for the service of G-d, and love and unity among Jews. Pekudei means numbers and represents revealing the unique individual contribution of each individual person and creation. The fact that the Torah portion of Vayakhel is sometimes read by itself shows that there is perfection already in unity, even before revealing each individual’s contribution. Unity on its own is already something amazing.
