First Thing in the Morning

The Rebbe's Pharmacy | December 10, 2025

Sichah 31, Rebbe Nachman says: “It is fitting for a person to always daven first thing in the morning as early as he can, since according to the incredible virtue of tefillah – which is very, very precious – who knows if he will be able to daven afterwards. Therefore, as early as a person can be, it is fitting for him to go quickly and [daven] early.”

This teaching is clearly connected to the previous sichah. Here, Rebbe Nachman once again emphasizes that we shouldn’t waste time in the morning before davening Shacharis. Certainly, it is always good to do some preparations for tefillah – such as going to the mikveh and learning some Torah, as we discussed above. However, these preparations should be done efficiently, and we should wake up early enough to do them so that we don’t come late to davening and risk having other obligations that prevent us from going to shul altogether.

The tefillos of every single Jews are very precious to Hashem. Even if we don’t feel like we’re able to connect to Hashem in davening, nonetheless, just by saying the words of davening with a ratzon to come closer to HaKadosh Baruch Hu gives Him unbelievable nachas. Therefore, we shouldn’t try to wait until we reach the level of deveikus that we feel is necessary for tefillah. Rather, we should get out of bed, do the basic preparations with zerizus, go to shul, and attach ourselves to the holy words of davening!
