What causes people to get old?
In this week’s parsha, Yaakov Avinu grows old and prepares for the end of his life, telling his children his final wishes and blessing them one last time. Aging and death are complex processes influenced by genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Aging is mainly caused by the death of cells. Changes in gene activity levels affect muscle and mind function, making us more susceptible to illnesses. While genetics play a role, factors such as diet, exercise, and social connections are also crucial. Studies have found that most people feel their happiest in their later decades, from their 60s to early 80s. Older people are often better at navigating social situations and conflicts, probably because of their life experience and their ability to control their emotions.
