Rav Dovid Tevli

Me'oros Hatzaddikim | June 27, 2025

Son of Rav Nassan Nota. A scion of a line of prominent rabbis of Brod.

Rav Dovid served as rav in several communities such as Horchuv and Lisa. He exchanged halachic responsa with other gedolim such as Rav Yechezkel the Noda BeYehuda, Rav Akiva Eiger.

During the famed incident of the “get of Kliva”, he sided with Rav Yisroel Lipschitz and his halachic opinion and teshuva is printed in Ohr Yisroel.

During his Shabbos HaGadol derasha of תקמ''ב he waged a war from the pulpit against Divrei Sholom VeEmes, a sefer. Initially, he supported the work, only to discover its true nature as a document that promoted destructive reforms introduced by so called innovators who wanted to make changes in the traditional chinuch. It was this derasha that caused Naphtali Hertz Vizel to author Rechovos which was devoted to defending his reforms.

Rav Dovid Tevli passed away on 16 Teves תקנ''ב 1792 in Lisa. He was eulogized by Rav Elazar Fleckels in a hesped published in Olas Chodesh.
