Bittul to Hashem Within the Mundane

Havineini | December 08, 2025

This is the avodah of our weekdays. During these days, we live down below. We wear our work clothes, and we engage in mundane pursuits. But if we remember Hashem while engaged in these things, an incredible thing happens: While our hands may be engaged in gashmiyus activities, we have brought the Ribbono shel Olam into the world. If we think of Hashem, Who has commanded us to engage in these actions, then we become entirely batteil to the One Who has sent us!

One example of this is a construction worker. He builds a building, but he’s not building as he wants—he’s following a plan with precision. He constantly refers to the architectural plans to see if he’s following them perfectly. He’s constantly obeying what he was commanded to do.

When every person who finds himself in This World pursues his mundane needs by Hashem’s command, he permeates This World with Hashem’s light. This is our avodah during the days of the week. Every Mota’zei Shabbos, the Ribbono shel Olam brings a degree of concealment to the world. He sends a Malach to spread a layer of darkness over the world—and now we must work davkah within the darkness to follow the Ribbono shel Olam and bring Elokus into that place of darkness.
