Rav Chaim Pinto II was born in Mogador (current Essaouira), Morocco. His grandfather, Rav Chaim I, was the great-grandson of Rav Yosef Pinto, who fled Spain to Rome with twenty-six talmidim after the 1492 expulsion. However, he had to flee to Damascus after local priests trapped him into a theological debate and soundly lost. When the Jewish population of Mogador began thinning out, Rav Chaim II moved to Casablanca, while his son, Rav Moshe Aharon Pinto, stayed in Mogador to prevent his father’s shul from closing down.
Rav Avrohom Yeshaya Karelitz - Chazon Ish (5714 / 1953 - 71st Yahrzeit)
Rav Avrohom Yeshaya Karelitz, the Chazon Ish, was educated by his father, the Av Bais Din in Kosova, Poland (near Grodno). His first work on several parts of the Shulchon Aruch was published anonymously in Vilna in 1911 under the title Chazon Ish, by which name he became known. He moved to Vilna about 1920 and moved to Eretz Yisrael in 1933, settling in Bnei Brak.
Rav Shlomo Freidman (5719 / 1958 - 66th Yahrzeit)
Son-in-law of Rav Yisrael Freidman of Sadigura. Both his father and father-in-law were scions of the Ruzhiner dynasty. In 5706 he was crowned as Rebbe in Tshortkov by the Chassidim but only accepted the leadership position when his mother forced him to do so. He was among the founders of Chinuch Atzmai.

Rav Shlomo Carlebach was the foremost Jewish songwriter in the second half of the twentieth century, who used his music to inspire Jews around the world. Over his sixty-nine years, he lived in Manhattan, San Francisco, Toronto and Moshav Or Modiin, Eretz Yisrael. He studied at Yeshiva Torah Vodaas in Brooklyn and at the Bais Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, New Jersey. From 1951 to 1954, he worked as a traveling emissary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Menachem Mendel Schneerson.
Rav Elozor Menachem Mann Shach (5762 / 2001 - 23rd Yahrzeit)
Rav Elozor Menachem Mann Shach was born in Vaboilnick, Lithuania, and left for Ponevezh (38 km away) at age seven. He learned in Slabodka under Rav Yechezkel Bernstein (Divrei Yechezkel), then under the Alter (Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel), and developed a close relationship with Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer, whose niece he eventually married. In 1927, he served as Rosh Mesivta at Kletzk under Rav Aharon Kotler, holding the same position in Novardok from 1932–34. In 1951, he started his career as Rosh Yeshiva at Ponevezh under Rav Yosef Kahaneman.

Born on 24 Nissan ה'תש"ט in Rechovot. His mother Esther Rochel was the daughter of Rav Chaim Mordechai Rosenbaum of Nadvorna Bnei Brak. He passed away on 16 MarCheshvanה'תש"ף . His 4 sons all succeeded him as rebbes.

Rav Menachem Mendel Hager of Kossov was the founder of the Vizhnitz and Kossov dynasties and author of Ahavas Sholom. The son of Rav Yaakov Koppel Chassid, Rav Menachem Mendel was a student of Rav Moshe Leib of Sassov, Rav Tzvi Hirsch of Nadvorna, and Rav Zev Wolf of Tcharne-Ostra. His grandson was Rav Menachem Mendel of Vizhnitz.

Rav Meshulom Zushe Twersky, the Chernobyler Rebbe of Bnei Brak, was an eighth-generation direct descendant of Rav Menachem Nachum of Chernobyl. Rav Meshulom Zushe was born in Mozyr, Minsk. He lived and learned with his maternal grandfather, the Admor of Tchechov, Rav Yeshaya Halberstam, the youngest son of the Divrei Chaim. In 1959, he moved his court to Bnei Brak.

Rav Yeshaya Bardaki was born in Pinsk and taught Torah there, but decided to settle in Eretz Yisrael after his first wife was niftar. When the ship carrying Rav Bardaki, his son, Shmuel Akiva, and his daughter, neared the port of Akko, it was wrecked, and all the passengers were thrown into the sea. Rav Bardaki, however, was a powerful swimmer, and, with his two children on his back, he swam ashore. Upon reaching Yerushalayim, Rav Bardaki was appointed head of the Ashkenazi community.

Rabbi Baruch, was known from his youth for his pure and delicate soul. From year to year, he elevated himself in the rungs of Torah study and the fear of Hashem. He possessed a vast knowledge in all fields of Torah, hidden as well as revealed. His only ambition and passion was Torah, which he studied constantly. After a few years, Rabbi Raphael Baruch Toledano became a great scholar in Shas and the Poskim. He then began the study of Kabbalah with his teacher Rabbi Yosef Elkubi. Rabbi Raphael revealed himself to be a master in the subject by virtue of his sharp mind and intelligence. Rabbi Raphael Baruch Toledano traveled to Eretz Yisrael and settled in the city of Bnei Brak, and in the year 5731 (1971), in the month of Cheshvan, he rendered his pure soul to his Creator.

Rav Nechemia Kibel was born in Memphis, Tennessee, to Holocaust survivors. He entered the newly founded Yeshiva of the South, under Rav Meir Belsky, who was one of the first talmidim of Rav Yitzchok Hutner. He served as a Maggid Shiur at the Yeshiva in Memphis, then founded and taught at RITSS (Regional Institute for Torah and Secular Studies), Cincinnati’s Bais Yaakov in 1989. A few years later, he played a major role in the founding of Cincinnati’s Community Kollel.

Born in the Lithuanian town of Shkod, his family traced its ancestry back to the brother of the Vilna Gaon, Rav Avrohom, mechaber of Maalos HaTorah. His father was Rav Eliyohu Boruch Kamai. With his father’s petira, however, he replaced him as Rav and Rosh Yeshiva in Mir.

Rav Dovid was born in Luban, Russia, in 5689/1929, while his father, Hagaon Harav Moshe Feinstein, zt”l, served as Rav. Rav Dovid learned in Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim with his father, and eventually began delivering shiurim there. When his father was niftar, he took over the yeshivah and many of his responsibilities, including becoming a prominent chaver of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudas Yisrael of America; a member of the Vaad Roshei Yeshivah of Torah Umesorah; and was involved in Chinuch Atzmai, Agudas Harabbonim, and many other communal organizations.

Rav Mordechai Sharabi was born in Sharab, Yemen, to Rav Yehuda and Miriam Taizi. His father was niftar before he was born, and his mother passed away just two years later. He was raised by his grandfather, Rav Yefes Avrohom, Rav in Sharab. Rav Mordechai’s other grandfather was Rav Sholom Sharabi, the Rashash. In 1931, shortly after he married, Rav Mordechai moved to Eretz Yisrael and settled in Yerushalayim. He later founded Yeshivas Nahar Sholom in the Machane Yehuda section of the city. Although they never had children, tens of boys of the neighborhood had their meals with them and grew to become Roshei Yeshiva and Roshei Kollel. It is related that in the week of Rav Mordechai’s petira, the Baba Sali experienced a frightening premonition that much Jewish blood would be spilled, including children. He davened the entire day and fasted, despite being over ninety years of age. The next morning, he announced that the gezeira had been lifted, and that one of the Tzaddikim had given his life away for the generation. At the time, the Baba Sali was not aware that Rav Mordechai was ill. Indeed, the Tzaddik was niftar that week.
Rav Mordechai Leib Zuckerman (5764 / 2003 - 21st Yahrzeit)
Rav Mordechai Leib Zuckerman, mechaber of Meir Einei Yisrael, was born in Smorgon, a city near Vilna. In 1931, he moved to Radin to learn with the Chofetz Chaim. After the petira of the Chofetz Chaim, Rav Mordechai Leib stayed in Radin for eight more years. In 1948, he moved to Yerushalayim. When he settled in Givat Shaul, he accepted the positions of Rav of the Perushim shul and the head of Kollel Chevron there.

Rav Dovid ibn Zimra - Radbaz (5334 / 1573 - 451st Yahrzeit)
Rav Dovid ben Zimra, the Radbaz arrived in Tzefas as a child after the Spanish expulsion, and immigrated to Egypt in 1514. Shortly thereafter, he was recognized as chief Rav of Egypt, a post he held for forty years. In 1553, he returned to Eretz Yisrael, settling in Tzefas.
