Hashem's Joy in Redemption: Like a Groom Rejoicing Over a Bride

Peninim on the Torah | December 08, 2025

ישיש עליך אלקיך כמשוש חתן על כלה
Yasis alayich Elokayich kimsos chasan al kallah
Your G-d will rejoice with you like a groom rejoicing over a bride.

Hashem’s return to His People, to His city, to His Sanctuary, will not be compared to one who returns to a nation with whom He had once been angry. It will not be like a man who is machazir gerushaso, takes back his divorced wife, where the love is incomplete, and there is no public rejoicing, dancing and celebration. Rather, explains the Malbim (commentary to Yeshayah 62:5), it will be like the joy of a chosson over a kallah whom he marries for the first time, at whom he had never been angry. Likewise, Hashem will rejoice over us. So too will Hashem rejoice over Klal Yisrael, as He establishes a new bris, covenant, and he will not remember the former troubles and failings. As chosson and kallah begin a life anew, so, too, will our relationship with Hashem.
