The Trials of Avraham and His Children

Sparks from Breslov | December 31, 2025

All of the stories of the Torah are reflections of how things come out for the Jewish people throughout time. We see that in our parsha. The excruciating trial of Avraham and his son replays in every generation as the most hidden and difficult reality.

The war happening right now in Eretz Hakodesh is a tremendous test of our faith. Simultaneously there also is a very different and dark reality happening in the diaspora. In Israel the nation acts with purpose and unity, and this gives us comfort and light. In the diaspora, however, things are muddy. The amount of hatred and sheker (falsehood) is so overwhelming that once again in our times we are afraid just because we are Jewish.

Rabbi Nosson of Breslov, helps us understand the existence of falsehood. He teaches that the exile of our people is also an exile of truth. G-d's seal is truth, and in exile our relationship to G-d is dimmed. This causes falsehood and doubt to increase in the world. The further one is from Him, the further one is from truth.

But there is a purpose for this. Sheker exists in the world as a backdrop for the ultimate revelation of God's truth. The way this comes to light is though the tests of the tzadikim. The tests of Avraham bring the truth of G-d and the greatness of the Jewish spirit to the world.

Before G-d revealed Himself in Lech Lecha, Avraham came to awareness of G-d on his own. He reflected and realized the truth of Hashem's existence as the Director of the world. He paid the price for this. In Ur Kasdim the people labelled him a heretic, and he was thrown into a fiery furnace. But he survived. When he came out unscathed the truth of Hashem also emerged to the world.

Now, the worst test imaginable happens to Avraham. He is asked to bring his son as a sacrifice. This too, is to reveal the truth of G-d. So too all of the tzadikim, and the nation as a whole, are tested in this way. Even our very bodies are lashed with fire. Avraham was the first to be so tested, and the nation's purpose, and the truth of Hashem emerges from him.

In the end of days we as a nation will testify to the Oneness of G-d. So too in these dark times of falsehood the Jewish people will emerge with the truth of G-d on our lips, IY"H.
