A stone is a very uncomfortable pillow. Yet, since Yaakov had some benefit from it, he exalts the stone, by pouring Malchus’dik Shemen upon it. He makes it an upright Matzeiva (מלשון נציב וזקוף). And makes a shpiel out of the lowest element; a stone that isn’t alive and can’t even grow. He is thankful to the stone. The Chovos Halvavos says that a person has to have lots of thanks even for tiny things. R' Chatzkel Levenstein Zatzal said that every small Avoda in Shamayim is Gevaldig, and they are all big in His eyes.
