Parshas Vayeitzei – A Jewish Home
This week’s Parsha begins with ויצא יעקב מבאר שבע וילך חרנה. The Torah gives two reasons why the Torah repeats the story of Yaakov leaving Be’er Sheva and going to Charan. A Jewish person can make the following observations:

Lessons from Yaakov’s Journey
This is why the Torah makes a point of describing Yaakov’s journey. The Torah tells us how Yaakov prepared himself for the challenges ahead. As we mentioned previously, every detail in the Torah is a lesson for us.

Protecting the Head – A Deeper Lesson
The Torah continues by telling us that Yaakov protected his head with stones. Seemingly, if Yaakov needed protection, why only his head? There are two ways in which a person can approach challenges in life.

Holiness in the Jewish Home
When Yaakov was looking to protect himself, he chose stones for his head. The reward for such behavior is that the home becomes a place of holiness, not only while awake and in prayer, but even in sleep. Everything in the home, even the fork and spoon, must be holy.

Through What?
Through what does the home become holy? Through this: that the beginning is “And he came across the place” (and Davened), until a point that not only while awake and in prayer is there holiness, but also even in sleep it is. “And this” there where he finds himself “is the gateway to heaven”. Then the house becomes, and everything that is found in it, a house of G-d. And this is also a lesson and a directive for everyone, and specifically for those who will build a Jewish home; Chosson and Kallah. That not only the Siddur and Chumash that are found in the house are holy, but also, Lihavdil, the fork and the spoon of the home must be holy.
