Learning Love and Respect from the Avos

Bitachon Weekly | December 31, 2025

Surely learned to love and respect every human from his Zeide, Avraham Avinu, who bowed down to three people who appeared like lowly Arabs who worshipped the dust of their feet. By Avraham Avinu every human is super precious. He even davens for wicked Sedom people.

Even If You Feel Weak, Always Make Believe That You Are Strong and Will Conquer Even the Most Powerful Yetzer Hara’s

Yet, Yaakov isn’t Nis'pael even from a Malach, and he wrestles with him all night and wins! This is totally impossible to understand; but we see the Koach of a true Adam, who appreciates his own Tzelem Elokim. And surely his superior strength (in easily taking off the stone of the Be’er (well) as if it were a bottle cap) is also a Siman of his superiority over the shepherds in Ruchaniyus.

Avraham Avinu is also not Nis'pael from four powerful kings, and he unhesitatingly goes to war against them to save Lot, fearless as a lion. (Ramban). When we try to emulate our Avos, as Chazal say: חַיָיב אָדָם לוֹמַר מָתַי יַגִיעוּ מַעֲשַי לְמַעֲשֵה אַבוֹתַי — a person must always ask himself: “When will my deeds reach the lofty heights of the Avos?” we should try to always make believe that we are strong (even if inside we feel weak) and will conquer even our most powerful Yetzer Hara’s.

Despite the great revelation Yaakov saw in his dream when he slept, he still had Cha'rata (regret) when he awoke. מַה נוֹרָא הַמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה וְאָנֹכִי לֹא יָדָעְתִּי — How awesome is this holy place; I was not aware of it (and I slept there unknowingly). Yaakov has fear and awe of holiness. He is the total opposite of Eisav’s “carefree” cheap and Zil'zul. At the end of the Parsha, it says: וַיִשָּבַע יַעֲקֹב בְּפַחַד אָבִיו יִצְחָק — Yaakov swore in the Fear of his father, Yitzchok. His father taught him Yiras Shamayim, and true fear means respect and Chashivus and truth.
