Uri Uri Shir Dabeiri

Peninim on the Torah | December 10, 2025

עורי עורי שיר דברי
Uri, Uri, shir dabeiri
Rouse yourself, rouse yourself – speak a song.

The stanza begins with the word Hisoreri, hisoreri – Awaken, awaken, which is a call to the Mikdash Melech, Holy City/Sanctuary to return to be rebuilt. The neshamah of every Jew is also encouraged to not delay the moment, to awaken from its slumber and seize the moment. Hashem is enabling redemption. Do not miss the opportunity. It then follows with Uri, uri, rouse yourself. A distinction exists between “rouse” and “awaken.” Hisoreri reflects an isarusa d’lei’lah, an awakening from Above, with the voice of Hashem awakening us, knocking on the doors of the Holy City, calling her to awaken in preparation for the Redemption. This denotes Hashem’s Providence manipulating world events, so that the Jewish people return home.

In contrast, Uri, uri, implies isarusa d’l’tatah, an awakening from below, referring to the inner power within the Jewish souls to return to teshuvah. It is going to happen, with our voluntary participation – or without. How much better it will be if the inner “Uri, uri” quickly responds to the Hisoreri, Hisoreri from Above, so that we can put the galus, exile, behind us, and return home.
