Advancing in Holiness After Chanukah

Lebin mit Moshiach | June 27, 2025

After the conclusion of Chanukah, having fulfilled the avodah of Chanukah in all its details, we still have to follow the lesson from Chanukah: to advance in holiness. The halacha regarding Chanukah is that we light one candle the first day, then we progressively add more every night, because we have to advance in holiness.

It would be unconscionable to think that after Chanukah we should revert to the previous level of our avodah wherein we have to descend, Heaven forbid, to a lower level; on the contrary, one has to enhance his avodah to reach ever greater spiritual heights.

The Chanukah oil is symbolic of Pnimius HaTorah (inner dimension of Torah), and the obligation to place the Chanukah lamp “at the door to the outside,” is symbolic of spreading the wellsprings of Chassidus outward.

In earlier generations Pnimius HaTorah was “concealed and hidden even from scholars of the Torah except for a select few, and even then [it was taught privately] not publicly” (Tanya Igeres Hakodesh #26); However in the times of the Ariza”l it was “permitted and a duty to reveal” Pnimius HaTorah. Following that, in the times of the Baal Shem Tov, Pnimius HaTorah was revealed even more, through the revelation of Chassidus, particularly Chabad Chassidus.

The ever expanding dissemination of Chassidus progressed from generation to generation through our Rebbeim up until the Previous Rebbe, who disseminated Chassidus to all corners of the world through his disciples and Shluchim (emissaries) the “Chayolei beis Dovid” (soldiers of the house of David) who go out to battle those that “ridicule the footsteps of Moshiach.” Until they will be victorious in the coming of Moshiach.

Thus, after the avodah of the six generations of our Rebbeim the Nessi’im, who have nurtured the “Tree of Life” of Toras HaChassidus, that it should give its fruit until Moshiach – presently, in the seventh generation all that remains to be done is to bring down and reveal the Eternal Beis HaMikdash in the true and complete Geulah through Moshiach tzidkeinu, whose coming depends on the spreading of the wellsprings of Chassidus outward.
