Rebbe Aharon HaLevi Horowitz was born in 5526 (1766) to his father Rabbi Moshe who was said to be a descendant of the holy Shelah. He was among the close disciples and household members of the Alter Rebbe, Rebbe Shneur Zalman of Liadi with whom he stayed from the age of seventeen. In Liadi, he served as a choizer—one who would review and repeat the Rebbe's teachings—and guide for the older married scholars, alongside the Rebbe's son, the Mitteler Rebbe, who guided the younger ones. In the Alter Rebbe's final years, differences of opinion intensified between Rebbe Aharon and the Mitteler Rebbe.
