Hashem la’mabul yashav va’Yeishev Hashem Melech l’Olam. Hashem sat (enthroned) at the Flood. Hashem sits (enthroned) as King Forever.
The concept of Hashem as sitting enthroned means that He is permanent and immutable. Hashem was covering the world with a great Flood. This did not affect His permanence. The Flood was a wake-up call for the world. Perhaps the greatest sign of Divine Providence is the fact that a select group was spared and that the waters did not affect Eretz Yisrael. This is a practical insight which applies, not only to the Flood, but to every “natural” act of devastation. If one opens up his eyes, he will note that a pattern exists for everything. “Natural disasters” should be viewed, not as random indiscriminate events, but as manifestations of Divine Providence, directed with precision and purpose. Hashem choreographed every detail of the Flood. It was not merely a disaster; it was a recalibration of the world, allowing for a fresh beginning in which its inhabitants would live by a new and refined moral compass. Everything has purpose; every event unfolds with exact precision in accordance with the Divine Plan.
