Rebbe Nachman continues: “And a wise person will understand these words on his own, and he will understand one thing from another thing, because it’s impossible to explain everything in writing.” The reason he adds this idea is that each one of us goes through such unbelievable tests and unique challenges that we give up and stop thinking about what is good for us or not. Sometimes we get stuck in such feelings of guilt about what we did in the past or we worry so much about what we will do in the future that we think the advice of emunah won’t be able to help us.
Therefore, we have to look for the truth at all times. We have to use our seichel to see how to apply emunah to all aspects of our lives. We have to be smart and understand one thing from another: If we make a certain decision what will happen? If we choose not to strengthen our emunah in a particularly difficult situation, what will be the result?
This is not profound wisdom. In fact, it’s very simple. It’s something we can do at all times. We just need to use this clear concept to force ourselves to be strong in emunah so that we can have a good life. We have to remember this basic idea in order to break through the illusion of Hashem’s hiddenness and find comfort amidst all of our suffering.
