Pathways to the Heart

A person must know that the Holy One, blessed be He, greatly values beginnings. This is the reason why we take out an additional Torah scroll on Simchat Torah: one to read the portion ‘Vezot HaBerachah,’ and the second to begin reading the portion of ‘Bereshit.’

The scroll of ‘Vezot HaBerachah’ represents those who have already completed the Torah, and the scroll of ‘Bereshit’ – those who have not yet started, who now have the opportunity to start anew along with the entire congregation.
