Chapter Five

And there is to say on this, of the manifestation of the essence of the divine soul in the Jew regarding atonement. And how the manifestation of the essence of the divine soul will affect atonement, not only in the higher levels of the G-dly soul, (the Yechida of the soul where atonement is obtained without forgiveness for no sin exists there). But the essence of the divine soul in the Jew will affect atonement even in the lower levels of the G-dly soul i.e. the Nefesh - the lowest level of the soul, where forgiveness is needed. Because the essence of the divine soul is its essence in all levels of the soul.

This is that also on the day of atonement there are found these two concepts. The manifestation of the essence of the divine soul, into its various levels. Beginning with the highest level of Yechida, which is one with G-d, up to the lowest level called Nefesh, the G-dly soul, how it gives vitality to the body.

There is the revelation of the essence of the G-dly soul which is bound with the Essence of G-d. The Divine soul as explained in Tanya (Chapter 2), is verily a piece of G-d. This expresses itself in the five levels and names of the Divine soul, known from lowest to highest as Na”RanChai: Nefesh-Ruach-Neshomo-Chai-Yechida. In very general terms, Nefesh expresses how the Jew brings G-dliness into the physical world, i.e. through the observance of Torah and Mitzvot. Ruach, Neshomo, and Chai express how the Jew brings G-dliness into his own soul, as it is in a physical body. Yechida expresses the essence of the Jew, how it is one with G-d and does not want nor can become separated from Him. However, when a Jew sins, it seems that a separation has occurred between the Jew and G-d, in the very least a separation in the lower levels of the G-dly soul, the Na”Ran. However, through Teshuva these defects which are caused by sin in the lower levels of the soul can be corrected. More so Teshuva reveals that even in these lower levels, the defect is only superficial and not real. For even in these levels the G-dly Essence is there and does not allow for any separation at all.

And this, concept the revelation of the G-dly Essence is revealed in the particular levels of the Neshomo-soul up to the level of Nefesh in it, the lowest level in the G-dly soul.

And that through this the revelation of the G-dly Essence is revealed the atonement (that is in the above mode, atonement without forgiveness needed for it is as if no defect has occurred from the start) also into the level of the soul which in it is associated defect - having sinned. And this occurs through the five prayers said on the Yom Kippur Day.

And this is that the day of atonement is a day in which we are obligated in it to pray five prayers.

The five prayers are corresponding to the five names of the soul, the Nefesh, Ruach, Neshomo, Chai and Yechida.

And the concept of: “A day that is obligated in five prayers” is the revelation of the essence of the soul where it is as if no defect occurred from the start.

Which is due to the power of the day itself, the day of Yom Kippur which reveals the essence of the Jew.

It is then revealed this G-dly Essence into the particular levels of its own self - even into the lowest level of Nefesh.

And there is to say regarding this revelation of the essence of the G-dly soul into the particular levels of the soul, that the difference in the revelation of the essence between the five prayers is, not only in the place (the level of the soul) where the essence of the soul is revealed, if in Nefesh or Ruach or Neshomo or Chai or Yechida, but also in the degree of the revelation. That in the prayer of Neila, the closing and highest prayer of the day, the category of Yechida - the highest level in the G-dly soul is revealed and thus more of its G-dly essence is revealed.

The revelation of this G-dly essence of soul is in Neila more than the four prayers that were beforehand.

And the same it is with regard to the four prayers themselves said earlier in the day. That the difference in the five prayers of the day is as well in the mode of the revelation if more or less of the G-dly soul's essence is revealed.

And similarly it is in the categories above in the spiritual worlds with regard to the manifestation of G-d’s Essence into them. That on Yom Kippur a greater level of G-d Essence is revealed. Yet it differentiates between lower and higher worlds, though in all of them the G-dly Essence is more manifest, more than in any other day of the year.

Because of this, the day of atonement is: “A day which is obligated in five prayers”.
