A Story of Parnassah and the Rebbe's Blessing

Cyber Farbrengens | February 16, 2026

Dear Alumni Sheyichyu!
Sholom U’Brocho!
Mazel Tov to Rabbi & Mrs. Mendel Spalter on the birth of their son. May they bring him up lTOveCHuMAA”T mitoch harchovo, and to be a true chayol! (If anyone is aware of any mazel tov’s that I omitted (there must be more than one!) please let me know).

Thank you as always for the feedback, it is much appreciated.

Over Yud Shvat, a yungerman shared with me the following story, which took place with his father, who was a chosid who lived in Canada:

Once, a chosid went into yechidus and handed in his letter. Inadvertently, on this occasion he had forgotten to request a brocho for parnosoh, as he was accustomed to do.

As the Rebbe was reading his letter, the Rebbe remarked “Un vos iz mit parnossoh?” [And what about (a brocho for) livelihood?]

The chosid suddenly realized that he had overlooked this vital detail, and cried out “OY!” (worried about the ramifications of this oversight). The Rebbe, however, immediately calmed him down, saying “Mact nisht ois, du zolst hobben parnosoh beharchovo!” [Don’t worry, you should have livelihood in abundance].

This chosid was a shochet in Canada. The shochtim were paid very small salaries; however, during that year it came to light that there was, in fact, large sums that were being earned, that ended up (in the large part) in the pocket of those working in management. There was a shuffle in which the people in management were let go, the shochtim were unionized, and the institution was restructured. One of the results was that each shochet received a bonus of between 2 and 3 thousand dollars (which may not sound like a lot, but was, at that time, a significant sum of money).
