Energized Avodah

Now, before we conclude I want to make one more point. We have to understand that just by talking about this subject tonight, just because you came here to listen, that’s not enough. To be a lifnim mishuras hadin person requires a certain energy, a commitment to want to be better; a desire to be a head taller than the ones around you.

That’s why when we analyze the grammar of the verse we’re talking about you’ll note that word ןּוֽׂ ֲ̆ﬠַֽי – the word that teaches the principle of lifnim mishuras hadin – has a nun at the end that it doesn’t really need. It could have said וּׂ ֲ̆ﬠַי ר∆ׁ ֲ̆‡ – that they will do. The nun at the end, yaasun, is for emphasis. It means ‘you have to do with a certain extra energy to go beyond the line of duty.’ That’s what Hashem asked of the Jewish nation before Matan Torah: “I want you to go all out for My Torah!”
