How Important Is Kosher Gaava And How Dangerous Is Anava Psula

Bitachon Weekly | June 27, 2025

וְּעָלִיתָ אַתָה וְּאַהֲרֹן עִמָּך יט כד

Only Moshe and Ahron were Zoche to come up to Har Sinai (Rashi). Before Moshe was Niftar, he wanted to remain alive forever, and when he was told that Adam, Noach, and the Avos were all Niftar, he said that he had greater qualities. (Me’am Lo’ez). And Hashem once told Ahron that he is greater than all the Nesi'im. (Rashi). Indeed, it says: וְאַתֶּם תִּהְיוּ לִּי מַמְלֶּכֶת כֹּהֲנִּים יט ו we will be a kingdom of Cohanim, and Rashi says that Cohanim means: ים רִ ש R' Yisroel Kanarik princes, so each and every Yid is like a leader to the rest of Klal Yisroel.

But we could venture to say that those who actually realize their superiority to others, like Moshe and Ahron, are Zoche to the greatest Madregos, like going up (literally) on Har Sinai. Of course, these same two people were the greatest Anavim (like it says that Ahron was: לֵב שֶּׁש מַּח בִגְדוּלַּת א חִיו a heart that rejoiced with his brother’s greatness, etc., and Moshe and Ahron said: וְנַּחְנוּ מ ה בשלח טז ח we are zero!) But like the Chovos Halvavos in Shaar HaK’niya says, first an Anav has to know his own value. We see how important is kosher Ga'ava, and how dangerous is Anava P'sula (inappropriate humility).
