Krias Hatorah
During the reading of the Aseres Hadibros, stand facing the Sefer Torah. They are read according to the division and tune known as ta’am elyon. The haftorah ends with the words zera kodesh matzavta (Yeshayahu 6:1-13).
Today is the 37nd yahrzeit of the Rebbetzin (Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson, wife of the Rebbe and daughter of the Frierdiker Rebbe). Learn more about the Rebbetzin at www.chabad.org/2100123.
The following are some of the horaos the Rebbe gave in connection with Chof-Beis Shevat:
- To establish new public shiurim in both nigleh and Chassidus, and to strengthen the shiurim that exist already. (The Rebbe connected the concept of establishing set times to study Torah with the Rebbetzin’s name, which has the same gematria as the word eis, “time.”)
- To give extra tzedakah, preferably in multiples of 470, the gematria of the Rebbetzin’s name.
- To establish mosdos in her memory, especially mosdos dedicated to the three mitzvos entrusted to women—lighting Shabbos candles, kashrus and taharas hamishpachah—and schools for girls.
- The Rebbe encouraged naming children after her and raising them to follow her ways.
A yahrzeit candle is also lit, to burn throughout the day.
The Rebbetzin’s Yahrzeit
On the Rebbetzin’s first yahrzeit, the Rebbe spoke about the various minhagim one does on a yahrzeit, including learning Mishnayos and giving extra tzedakah. (Visit www.chabad.org/22mishna for Mishnayos beginning with the letters of the Rebbetzin’s name.)
