Maor VaShemesh

Torah Papers | June 27, 2025

Maor VaShemesh - Rav Kalonymus Kalman Epstein (1753-1825), Poland; Known as "Kalmish". Son of Aaron Halevi Epstein and an alleged descendant from the Shmuel HaNavi and David HaMelech. Traveled to Lizhensk to study under the direct tutelage of R’ Elimelech, becoming his most favored of students and acting as the rabbi’s personal shamash. The kabbalistic commentary of the Maor Vashemesh is still studied by Chassidic and non-Chassidic Jews today, and some have referred to it as the "Shulchan Aruch" of Chassidut.

1874): “On this Shabbat, the source of healing is opened completely – just as it was at the time of Matan Torah, when everyone was healed, and they were renewed as at the beginning of Creation, not in the way of natural healing. For according to the way of nature, healing is only effective for a person whose strength has weakened due to an injury or illness, G-d forbid. But for the deficiency of a limb, no healing is effective. Or even someone whose hand or leg was cut off, no healing is effective because even if they make another limb in the form of the missing limb, it will have no life. But at the time of Matan Torah, everyone was healed – even those born with a deficiency of a limb or for any reason. Everyone was healed as at the beginning of the Creation when Hakadosh Baruch Hu created the world from nothing to something.”

Let us ask Hakadosh Baruch Hu to send a Refuah Shleima to all the sick of His people, to maintain the health of the healthy, and may we soon merit the arrival of the Ge’ula.
