Remembering Shabbos to Sanctify It

Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh | June 27, 2025

Remember the day of Shabbos to sanctify it.

The Ohr Hachaim explains that the Torah is instructing us to mention the name of Shabbos. Mentioning the name of Shabbos on the day of Shabbos sanctifies the day.

Remember the day – mention the name of the day. What should he mention? Shabbos. Why? To sanctify it.

The Zohar writes that Hashem’s name is Shabbos. By mentioning Shabbos, a person announces that this day is the day of Hashem.

What is the reason for this holiness of Shabbos? כִּי שֵׁשֶת יָּמִּים עָּשָּה ה' אֶת הַשָּמַיִּם וְאֶת הָּאָּרֶץ – because the six days of creation are Hashem’s six days, and He rested on the seventh. This is His day.
