In speaking about tzedakah, it says אנכי מצוך לאמר פתח תפתח את ידך לאחיך, I command you saying you shall surely open your hand to your brother...
We know of the importance of the mitzva of tzedakah. However, it goes further than that, as a person shouldn’t just give tzedakah but he should get others to donate as well. This idea is couched in the aforementioned words as it can be understood that אנכי מצוך, we are commanded לאמר, to tell others, פתח תפתח את ידך לאחיך, to donate.
We are witness today to many such people who fulfill this. Not only do they give of their own capital but they actively urge others to give as well. They may call their friends so they can donate, host a fundraiser for an institution, simply forward an email or use any of the many other methods to fulfill this. Fortunate is this special nation that we are a part of!
