Preparation for Receiving the Torah

One Point | June 27, 2025

IN THE GEMARA:

On ראש חודש סיון the Yidden arrived in מדבר סיני and camped opposite the mountain. The גמרא describes what they did on each of the following days in preparation for מתן תורה. However, on ראש חודש סיון itself, משה did not tell them anything, because they were tired and weakened from their travels.

QUESTION:

When בני ישראל left מצרים they were so eager to receive the תורה, they excitedly counted each day as they got closer. Now, arriving at הר סיני where they would actually be receiving the תורה, how could they be too tired to hear anything from משה?

ANSWER:

The journey from מצרים to הר סיני was not just a physical journey, but a tiring spiritual one as well, as the Yidden worked to rid themselves of the impurities of מצרים, becoming instead a ממלכת כהנים וגוי קדוש.

And on ראש חודש סיון they had the most difficult עבודה yet.

When the Yidden camped opposite הר סיני they underwent a tremendous transformation. Although people are naturally different from one another, the Yidden become perfectly united, not only כאיש אחד – acting in unison, but בלב אחד, all with one heart.

This is why משה did not tell בני ישראל to do anything specific on ראש חודש סיון. On this day they were tired from the emotional work they had invested to achieve something incredible. They had succeeded in becoming united כאיש אחד בלב אחד.

Further discussion:

Why was this unity of בני ישראל the perfect preparation for receiving the תורה? (See אות ו in the שיחה)
