The Rebbe's Involvement in the Expansion of Yeshivat HaRambam

Here's my story | December 08, 2025

5733 - 1972, after meeting with Rabbi Avraham Chaputa, head of the Sephardic Yeshivat HaRambam in Tel Aviv, who mentioned that he had been seeking government approval to expand the yeshivah on a specific plot of land, the Rebbe took the initiative to write to the Mayor of Tel Aviv urging him to grant the request. “This pertains to the foundational matter of public Torah study,” wrote the Rebbe, “particularly an institution of the Sephardic community, whose youth have unique challenges after having been uprooted from the countries where their families have lived for hundreds of years.” Shortly afterward, the land was awarded to the yeshivah. Rabbi Chaputa only learned of the Rebbe’s involvement decades later.
