Every Jew Can Swim Over The River On A Handkerchief

Lebin mit Moshiach | December 10, 2025

The Midrash (Rabba 21:5) relates that when the Jews left Egypt, Pharoah sent along offerings with the Jewish people to be offered to Hashem; Also in the spiritual sense, Pharoah sent with the Jews the “netzutzos” (holy sparks) that were in Mitzrayim – the Jews took them out when they were liberated from Egypt.

The knowledge that the golus itself brings about the elevation of the Geulah - makes it easier during the remainder of the golus:

Not only do we know with certainty that the Geulah is coming, but, moreover, every moment that we are in golus is a preparation and harbinger for the Geulah - thus, every moment in golus is not a moment in golus but a moment of preparation for the Geulah.

This means that with every deed that a Jew does each day that he is in golus, he is illuminating a small part of this physical world, he is refining and elevating another part of the physical and corporeal, a little more of klipas-nogah, through which we bring about the complete perfection of yemos haMoshiach, the revelation of the Infinite Light in this physical world, as is explained in Tanya (ch. 37).

It therefore follows, that we should look at every moment that we must still remain in golus, not as a moment of golus but rather as a preparation for Geulah. With this perspective in mind, we can much easier confront and overcome the difficulties of golus, to do our avodah.

Moreover, the avodah is so, that a person feels himself as a “free man” who is already not in golus, his neshama is in a state of freedom – his avodah in golus is as a “free man” that has to extract some other person that is still in captivity:

This is expressed with our emunah (faith) in the coming of Moshiach that he comes every day – not merely emunah in a superficial way, but an emunah that penetrates and permeates all of ones being, in an internalized way, and this emunah takes one out of the restrictions of the golus; He can do his avodah without consideration of the impediments and hindrances caused by the golus.

This way we can understand the saying of the Baal Shem Tov: That every single Jew can swim over a river “with a handkerchief” – if only he has the emunah in it!

When the emunah is (not only superficial, but) internalized, this faith places the entire person, with all his limbs, all his attributes, in the realm of the emunah, and it is no wonder that he is in control of nature, as his entire being is higher than nature, and all of nature was created for him, as the Sages say on the passuk “Bereishis” – for the Torah which is called reishis, and the Jewish people who are called reishis; When this is in a revealed state by a Jew (that he is on a level of reishis), he can accomplish everything he must do without being impeded by any obstacles.

One must remember, that he is on a mission from the Manhig haDor (leader of the generation), and then he is assured of having hatzlacha in a manner that transcends nature.
