16:29 “ראו כי ד' נתן לכם השבת על כן הוא נותן לכם ביום הששי לחם יומים, שבו איש תחתיו אל יצא איש ממקומו ביום השביעי”
“See that Hashem has given you the Shabbos; that is why He gives you on the sixth day a two-day portion of bread. Let every man remain in his place, let no man leave his place on the seventh day.” What does the Posuk mean when it says, “ראו” – that we should see that Hakodosh Boruch Hu gave us Shabbos? The following Divrei Torah will expound on this topic, and support the P’shat offered in the closing paragraph.
רבינו יואל – 16:29
“ראו כי ד' נתן לכם השבת על כן הוא נותן לכם ביום הששי לחם יומים, שבו איש תחתיו אל יצא איש ממקומו ביום השביעי” – “See that Hashem has given you the Shabbos; that is why He gives you on the sixth day a two-day portion of bread. Let every man remain in his place, let no man leave his place on the seventh day.” The first letter in this Posuk is a ר' and the last letter is a י'. This is a Remez for all of the ר"י – 210 years, that Klal Yisroel were in Mitzrayim, they heeded Shabbos Kodesh, for Moshe had requested of Paroah to allow Klal Yisroel to rest on Shabbos. It is because of the Shabbos Kodesh – “על כן הוא נותן לכם ביום הששי לחם יומים” – that Klal Yisroel received “six” things, each one of twelve. 1 – 12 months of the year, 2 – 12 Shevatim, 3 – 12 hours of the day, 4 – 12 hours of the night, 5 – 12 stones on the Choshen, 6 – 12 Mazalos. The Siman for these are the words, “הששי לחם” – “מים, יבטים, שנים, ש –ם ה זלותמושן, חילות, ל”. These 6 things of 12 – is a total of 72, (12x6=72) are K’neged the Shem ע"ב of Hakodosh Boruch Hu. With 72 hours, Hakodosh Boruch Hu created the six days of ימי בראשית – 12 hours each day x 6 – as the Posuk in Bereishis 2:4 says, “ביום עשות ד' אלקים ארץ ושמים”. The words, “ביום עשות ד'” – has a total of twelve letters, which are K’neged the twelve hours of the day. “ביום עשות” – The Roshei Taivos of these words, “ב"ע” are the Gematria of 72, and the word, “עשות” are the letters, “שעות” – the seventy-two hours in which Hakodosh Boruch Hu created the world.
ישא ברכה - 16:29
“ראו כי ד' נתן לכם השבת על כן הוא נותן לכם ביום הששי לחם יומים, שבו איש תחתיו אל יצא איש ממקומו ביום השביעי” – Why was Shabbos given to Klal Yisroel prior to Matan Torah, as it says in Meseches Sanhedrin 56b? Tehillim 111:10 “ראשית חכמה יראת ד'” – the first thing one needs to receive the Torah is Yirah, and Shabbos is the source of Yirah. This is as per the Yerushalmi in Meseches Demai 4:1 which says, “אימת שבת עליו” – the fear of Shabbos is upon him, and the words, “יראת האלקים” is the same Gematria as “שבת”. In order for one to truly connect to the Torah, he also needs Simcha, and Shabbos is also the source of Simcha, as we say in the Tefilos of Shabbos, “ישמחו במלכותך שומרי שבת”. In truth, Yirah and Simcha are one, as we see in Tehillim 2:11 “גילו ברעדה” to be happy with trepidation, and it says in the Tana D’vei Eliyahu, Perek 3, “יראתי מתוך שמחתי, ושמחתי מתוך יראתי”. Yirah, does not mean to fear Hashem, but to recognize His greatness, also known as Yiras Haromomos, and it is meant to be intertwined with Simcha, for what greater joy can there be than to be able to serve the awesome Ruler of the world, Hakodosh Boruch Hu.
