Sefer Hachasidim (Siman 86) writes the following poetic words: "The rule for acquiring wisdom is silence. If words are worth a selah (coin), silence is worth two. When I speak, I regret it. And when I don't speak, I don't regret it. Before I speak, I am in control of my words. But after I speak, my words are in control of me."
Once words have left a person's mouth, no matter how much he regrets them, he can never take them back. Therefore, one must be extremely careful before speaking.
