MOSHE EXPOUNDED THE TORAH IN SEFER DEVARIM

YEAR 2488 ACTIVITY

  • ST OF SHVAT UNTIL THE 6TH OF ADAR: MOSHE EXPOUNDED TORAH IN THE PLAINS OF MOAV
  • TH OF ADAR: MOSHE DIES (120 COMPLETE YEARS) BEGINS 30 DAYS OF MOURNING

הדברים האל
How many days did Moshe expound the Torah on the Plains of Moav?
The answer depends on how many days was the month of Shevat.

The time of birth of the new moon, i.e., the MOLAD, is determined by the period of the MOLAD. This period between one Molad to the next Molad is determined to be 29 days, 12 hours, and 793 parts. (The traditional time of the molad period is slower by about 1 day in every 15,304 years than the presently accepted time of the mean lunar conjunction.)

Since the Hebrew time system involves whole days, the length of a month can be either 29 days or 30 days. Beginning with Tishrei, the Hebrew months basically alternate between 30 and 29 days as follows:
Tishrei 30 Cheshvan 29 Kislev 30 Tevet 29
Shevat 30 Adar 29 Nisan 30 Iyar 29
Sivan 30 Tammuz 29 Av 30 Elul 29
For leap years the 30-day month of Adar is added immediately after Shevat.
Kislev & Chesvan change between 29 and 30 days allowing different length of years.

Thus, Moshe expounded Torah for the entire month of Shvat (see above), 30 days, and for the first six day of Adar, for a total of 36 days.
