However, one shouldn’t despair and think that he is not an “odom“ because every Jew possesses some level of yiras Shomayim.

The Ropshitzer Rebbe zy”a would say that the way to discern if a person has yiras Shomayim or not is to see if he is afraid to eat before davening Shacharis. If someone wakes up and sees a nice piece of cake that he desires to eat, but he holds himself back from partaking of it, it is a sign that he is afraid of something. What is he afraid of? No one will see him eating, so why doesn’t he eat? The answer is that he is afraid of Hashem and it is clear that he possesses at least some yiras Shomayim.
