Shabbos Shuvah and Preparations for Yom Kippur

Chabad.org Luach | December 10, 2025

Make sure to say Hamelech Hakadosh and to add the other additions for the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah.

In the paragraph Magen Avos (said after Shemoneh Esrei), replace the words “Hakel Hakadosh” with “Hamelech Hakadosh.”

Today’s haftorah is from Hoshei’a (14:2–10) and Michah (7:18–20). End with the words mimei kedem, and do not say the section from Yoel printed in some chumashim.

It is customary for the rav to give a derashah, discussing the relevant halachos of (Yom Kippur and) Sukkos.

Do not say Viyhi Noam and Ve’atah Kadosh (since Yom Kippur falls out during the week).

Tonight and tomorrow is the anniversary of the passing of Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson, the Rebbe’s mother, in 5725 (1964). For more on Rebbetzin Chana, visit www.chabad.org/2700576.

Although tomorrow we don’t say Tachanun, we say Tachanun today at Minchah.

Kaparos

Kaparos should preferably be done in the early morning hours. Some are accustomed to immerse in the mikvah before kaparos.

Take a white chicken and say the paragraph of Bnei Adam. Next, say the sentence of Zeh chalifasi while circling the chicken above the head three times. All this is done a total of three times.

If possible, bring your chicken to be shechted after kaparos. Some request permission from the shochet to cover the blood. If doing so, first make the following berachah:

ברוך אתה ה’ . . אשר קדשנו במצותיו וצונו על כיסוי דם בעפר

For more on kaparos, see below, “Hosafos.”
