I Don’t Need to Know About Tomorrow
The tachlis of Torah and mitzvos is that a person should live this way always, every day of his life. Chazal instituted that we should recite one hundred berachos every day so that we will constantly be aware of His kindness and sustenance. As soon as he wakes up, a person should give thanks for the clothing that he has. “Perhaps later I won’t have clothing... perhaps I don’t deserve clothing.... But the Ribbono shel Olam in His infinite kindness gave me clothing.”
And when a person eats his meal, he doesn’t waste his time checking the news and other frivolities; he feels as if Hashem is sitting beside him and feeding him, spoonful by spoonful! For this reason, the Shelah HaKadosh instituted to recite אחסר, לא רועי ה' לדוד מזמור Hashem is my Shepherd, I shall not lack, at the beginning of a meal—to help us remember that it is all from Him. And it is with this thought in mind that he recites המזון: ברכת “Hashem gave me bread to eat today. What will happen tomorrow? I don’t know, and I don’t even think about it! It’s not important for me to know what will occur tomorrow.” This is what it means to be in His Hands.
